The trailer for the “spiritual sequel” to 1992’s Candyman dropped this morning and the movie looks very promising. Candyman is produced by Jordan Peele and directed by Nia DaCosta. Take a look at the trailer before we talk anymore about it:
The first thing you notice in the trailer is that star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has an unhealthy obsession with the urban legend of Candyman which is never a good thing. In a sort of Nightmare on Elm Street 2 kind of way, we see his character is starting to become the Candyman reborn with certain scenes showing him having a hook hand in his reflection. Up until now I was under the impression that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was just taking over the role from series veteran Tony Todd but as you can see in the trailer at 2:17, Tony Todd is seen in a reflection reprising his role as Daniel Robitaille.
Tony Todd can be seen in the reflection in a cameo as the OG Candyman
Actress Vanessa Williams who appeared in the original film can also be seen in the trailer reprising her role and stopping Yahya’s character from saying Candyman‘s name. Another nice touch in the trailer is Destiny Child’s ‘Say My Name’ mixed with the original film score by Phillip Glass.
