The Editorial

This reveal comes after some frustration from the community over not knowing what characters they would be getting for purchasing the Kombat Pack. This brings up a serious point. As consumers and adults, do we need DLC of this sort to be a surprise? Samurai Shodown (2019) offered a free season pass during the first week of its release AND consumers were informed just which characters would be released and when. In the case of Mortal Kombat 11. the Kombat Pack is an additional $40 on top of the $60 base game. We were informed that it would include 6 new characters but only Shang Tsung was initially revealed to be a part of it. That was months ago. Since then and until now, all but two of the characters were officially revealed but fans had already purchased a Kombat Pack or Collector’s/Special Edition back in April.

Some fans are now upset that many of the characters are not ones that they would like to play with. This is both the fault of the consumer and the publisher. On the one hand, investing in a season pass with no knowledge the exact contents you are paying for probably isn’t the best move. On the publisher/developers side, it would be best to hold of on asking people to shell out money until they are prepared to tell the customer exactly what they will be selling.

I for one don’t mind these characters too much. I have been playing Mortal Kombat since it first released in arcades (yes I am old) so to be honest I do not think it is cool to sell us characters that are a part of the classic roster. Especially when 3 of the characters being offered here were playable in the base game just two games ago. Bringing back fan favorites is cool but they should be unlockable in the Krypt not for sale. DLC should be new characters and guests. At this rate Mortal Kombat 12 will be missing Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero which will be available as DLC which would be the end of it for me.
