Metal Gear Survive: Save Slots Locked Behind a Paywall

Konami seems to be actively looking for ways to lose their fanbase these days. Metal Gear fans have it the worse as Konami goes out of their way on a pretty regular basis to tarnish the beloved franchise. With Metal Gear Survive, the company takes a new approach to the series by ditching the “Tactical Espionage” MGS is known for and replacing it with a zombie defense mechanic that actually isn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. Gamers that are willing to give this new entry into the Metal Gear universe a try will quickly see that Konami has stooped to a new low. In a move that has already sparked outrage, Metal Gear Survive offers only one save slot and additional ones will have to be purchased using real money.

It seems that Konami found a loophole in their promise to not include the controversial loot boxes to the game. The currency used to purchase these slots, SV coins, can only be purchased using real money (or as a login bonus it seems).

Here is a breakdown of the SV coin structure:

  • 100 SV coins – $0.99
  • 550 SV coins – $4.99
  • 1150 SV coins – $9.99
  • 3500 SV coins – $29.99
  • 6000 SV coins – $49.99

So if you decide to purchase an additional save slot, you will need to spend $9.99. If you look at the $9.99 option you get 1,150 SV coins which will leave you with 150 coins remaining. While you can purchase other in-game items with these coins, anything “good” will certainly cost you more than your remaining balance. Game companies have been using this tactic in the hopes that players will then purchase more currency to even it out. With gamers being very vocal lately that they are against this practice, it seems that Konami has a lot to learn. I am expecting to see the $40 Metal Gear Survive on store shelves for $9.99 very soon…
