I have never been a huge fan of sports games outside of arcade titles like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz. I can appreciate games like Madden and NBA 2K but since I don’t really follow sports, sports sims like that are lost on me and do not hold my interest for more than a day or two.
My recent hands-on preview of Super Mega Baseball 2 at PSX gave me the same level of enjoyment that I would get from playing the arcade style sports games that I actually do enjoy all in a package that will appeal to casual and sim players alike.SMB 2 has a full fledged baseball sim at its core but comes in a fun package that doesn’t have to take itself too seriously to get its point across.
SMB 2 is a great social experience that brings back the fun of teaming up with friends in front of the television and not just standard online multiplayer (which is also included). On my first playthrough I was able to team up with another player to take on some poor bastard teamed up with the AI. Within a matter of minutes I was able to figure out the controls and for 30 minutes we were able to make that guy wish he never stepped foot in the convention center (good game by the way).
The game features a bit more realistic graphical style compared to the first game which gave some gamers the impression that the original game was aimed solely for children. The characters are more stylized than photo realistic but the models fit the gameplay perfectly.
SMB 2 is slated to hit the PS4 mid 2017 and will most likely be the only sports game I will sit down and play. Stay tuned for more updates as the game gets closer to release.
